Flood at Harlands Primary School & Uckfield Community College

June 2016

Incident

The storm on the morning of the 23rd June 2016 caused flooding in two schools. Water with silt overwhelmed and blocked the drains which then flooded the corridors, classrooms, and the main assembly halls in each school.

Our Approach

We look at fire or flood as an incident which has created specific problems for the client. The additional challenge here was to respond to the two incidents at the same time providing a high standard of service.

The specific problems identified with the council’s property department were:

  1. Where do they safely move pupils and staff around the affected areas?
  2. How to ensure as little disruption to the daily teaching activities?

Our approach is to focus on the customer’s problem first and provide the most cost effective and least disruptive solution within the constraints of health and safety requirements. We take full responsibility for the cleaning, drying and re-instatement of aspects of their emergency, taking the weight off their shoulders and allowing their staff to concentrate on the rest of their responsibilities.

Work carried out

5
  • Extracted sitting water from flooded areas and installed drying equipment to dry out
  • Created safe environment for staff and pupils to access personal effects and teaching materials
  • Sanitised all flooded areas to kill bacteria
  • Cleaned carpets

Throughout the whole process, we worked closely with the facilities team, bursar, loss adjuster and other council contractors to achieve the targets set for re-occupation and re-instatement.

Restoration Achievement

  1. All carpets excluding floor coverings on the floor were restored requiring no replacement
  2. All building fixtures were successfully cleaned
  3. Our specialised response to drying the wood block flooring saved replacement costs
  4. Our quick response created big savings in terms of disruption and relocation cost

Timeline

  • Within 1 hour of call out we had a Senior Technician on site at both schools to assess the damage, identify the client’s specific problem and create a plan with a realistic time scales and actions which were agreed with the School and Council Facilities Management Team
  • 3 hours on, a team arrived with the equipment specified by the Senior Technician to commence cleaning work extracting the standing water, installing drying equipment and sanitising to kill bacteria
  • We implemented a drying plan that allowed them to use the affected classrooms and corridors. The equipment installed took account of trip hazards and the age of the children.
  • Within 24 hours we had stabilised the environment, preventing further damage to the wood block flooring
  • Within 9 days the drying work was completed
