5 Benefits of Media Blasting

CPL Media Blasting

As you know some cleaning projects just need a bit more than soapy water and elbow grease!  At CPL we use a highly effective cleaning method called abrasive blasting – the general term used for various materials broken into tiny particles combined with high air pressure to remove rust, graffiti or contaminants without causing damage to the original surface.

The first abrasive blasting process received a patent in 1870 and some 150 years on this process is still a very effective cleaning method for both commercial and domestic properties alike.  There are several different forms of media blasting and experts will select the substance depending on the material that needs to be cleaned and the level of dirt that needs to be removed. Here are just some of the benefits of why media blasting could be good for your business.

  1. Flexibility delivering tailored approach

The variety of media which can be used for abrasive blasting allows greater flexibility tailored to your specific cleaning and finishing requirements.  It is possible to alter factors such as the type of media, the size of the particles, the velocity and angle of the blast stream, delivered by the blast gun and the distance from the surface when delivering the blast. The user has complete control over the process and the results it delivers.

  1. Smoother Paint Application

Media blasting is highly recommended before any large paint jobs.  It cleans surfaces faster and better than traditional methods (making it much more cost efficient) and is extremely effective at removing rust on metal surfaces and so providing a much greater opportunity for paint adherence.

  1. Sparkle and Shine

Glass Beads are a popular media choice and are excellent for materials requiring a brighter finish.  Glass is not as aggressive as other media and it is well suited for stainless steel or aluminium surfaces which can significantly reduce the number of surface imperfections.  Even better, glass beads can also be recycled multiple times and therefore are a sustainable and kind choice for the environment.

Did you know media blasting can use substances such as walnut shells?

Walnut shell abrasive is made from crushed walnut shells it is often used for blast cleaning and polishing surfaces such as wood, plastic or stone that could incur damage from harsher abrasives.

  1. Kind to the environment

Biodegradable substances such as fruit seeds, nut shells and soda particles are all non toxic and easily washed away after the cleaning process. The dust produced from these media is non toxic increasing worker safety whilst also reducing clean up costs.

  1. Longer-Term Damage Prevention

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Benjamin Franklin

We all know rust and corrosion are big factors to both equipment and structural failure and media blasting addresses both of those head on.  What’s more, techniques such as sodablasting not only remove rust but also help prevent any further rusting as the soda particles leave a fine white film over the metal.  The film then acts as a barrier given the metal added protection from oxidation.
